Blogtoberfest (2) giveaway! Zakka Style!

So here I am again :) Twice in TWO days...

As I mentioned yesterday, I joined in Blogtoberfest on a whim.  As in, I heard about it yesterday.  And I joined.  I also mentioned I might even go hard and have a giveaway.  Apparently things move fast in my blog world (first time ever...) because here we are at the giveaway post already!

Without further ado...I would love to giveaway a copy of the mighty Zakka Style by Rashida Coleman-Hale :)

This book is fab.  I haven't made anything from it yet, but have my eye on about 5 things in there for me or presents (I am a slow mover, despite much excitement!).

So why, I hear you cry, are you giving this wondrous book away?  Do you not treasure it and need to keep it close to you at all times?  Well... *hangs head in shame*, I was so excited when it came out that I entered EVERY blog giveaway going to get one.  I didn't win any (boooo).  So I sucked it up and bought it.  In fact, I was SO brave in the face of such inequity I accidentally sucked it up too hard and bought it twice.  BA-BOW!  Epic resourcing over-fail.

So it has been hanging around here, shaming me with its duplicity.  I vaguely planned on a gift to a (unspecified) friend, but no opportunity arose.  Instead, I will give it to an unknown, unspecified friend; yet to be determined.

All you need to do is leave a comment on this post telling me a stupid craft related mistake you made.  I have made so many I could start a whole new blog posting every day for the foreseeable future without breaking a sweat so there is no shaming here, just making me feel better really :)

Sadly I am not sure how many of my finest Tasmanian dollars will be required to post overseas, but am betting it will be many.  So this giveaway is restricted to Australia only (sorry...I know that's super annoying if you don't live here...).

See you tomorrow!

OOPS!  Speaking of dumb-ass mistakes...I forgot to add in the closing date for this - it's Friday 19th October (midnight AEST).  That way I can sort out the winner over the weekend, post the prize at the start of the next week and they might get it before Blogtoberfest is over!

  1. OK, so I'll miss out on the giveaway cause I'm in the states.....but a stupid craft mistake I did lately was on a word quilt. I was trimming the letter "R" and didn't realize that the "R" was stacked on a bunch of other letters. So I ended up trimming the "R", but sliced up a bunch of other letters.

But, I'm stopping by via Blogtoberfest and last year I signed up on a whim and didn't even have 31 posts total! Good luck.

    1. I am hoping to make all of them but it's a tall order :) fingers crossed! Thanks for commenting despite not being eligible for the giveaway :)

  2. Making a lined jacket, I trimmed the seams of the lining too close to the seam - thought about it for awhile and decided to iron a strip of interfacing over the seam to reinforce it as I was concerned it may not hold. Worst mistake - I had forgotten I had a vent in that seam and had sewn it all the way to the bottom, so I needed to unpick it and try and get the interfacing off! (and it had stuck really well this time!) Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

    1. Every time you want interfacing to stick (which, let's face it, is most times...) it seems a bit flaky - of course as soon as you don't it will be welded! I have followed your blog via google reader for some time and it makes me happy that someone who seems so great at sewing still has those moments!

  3. My lovely cleaner decided to be extra helpful and cleaned a rather large messy box of scrap fabric INTO THE RUBBISH BIN!!!! :0 There were scraps in there that I had been saving for 4 years, jut waiting for the perfect zakka project. And, yep, you bet I dug in amongst the veggie scraps and got all that fabric out again! My cleaner really is a lovely wonderful lady so I never told her about my exciting adventure exploring the inside of the rubbish bin.

    1. I love that your scraps were waiting for a zakka project :) I love that you didn't tell your cleaner either! Just make sure you hide those scraps from now on!

    2. Hi Milly - I never heard from Bron66 who was picked to win this on Friday, so instead you are the new winner! I love that you dug about in the veggie scraps for the fabric scraps...email me your address via chloe@deadlymite.com and the book is yours!

  4. My recent one was garment sewing (I don't craft much) when I was working with some fabric given to me and I trimmed the seam allowances too close on a neckline. I think it must have been rayon it frayed horribly in the wash. I had to unpick the topstitching, add some interfacing, re sew the seam and hope like billy-o that fixed it! Next time I washed it some of the hem came undone where I'd not turned it under enough. Nothing like the emotional load of gifted fabric to complicate things! the top is now done, and survived another wash intact.
Really admire your 31 day commitment :-)

    1. Good job fixing that - I might have given up! I haven't had too much precious gifted fabric to ruin to date..but I can see where the stress might have come from!

I just checked out your profile and realised you are right here in Hobart too! I loved the post about having a stall down in Salamanca :) My ultimate nightmare I think!

  5. OMG I did something really similar a few weeks ago. I went to JB and bought a CD and when I came home to put it on the CD shelf, I realised that I already had it!

As for craft related mistakes... the old measure twice, cut once rule always comes into mind, especially when using a fabric supplied by a customer. The number of times that I've cut components of a bag too short is frustrating!

    1. Think thrice, measure twice in my case :) What was the CD that was so good you bought it twice? I think Zakka Style kind of deserves twice - was the CD as good?

  6. Gee every craft project I undertake seems to mean fixing a mistake. My daughter asked me to cut out a rabbit she had drawn and wanted to sew and I cut his leg off! She wasn't pleased and it was never fixed.

    1. The best bit about this comment is "it was never fixed" - so perfectly sums up how it sometimes goes with the small people :)

  8. Um, I too have made a lot of stupid craft mistakes. One recent one was not checking whether my crochet pattern was written with US or UK terms and then getting a completely off result!

    1. Ahhh that old trap! The difference is so annoying and confusing, especially when you are starting out and trying to self-teach..I nearly gave up because of it!

  9. I qulited my entire quilt then I ralized the backing was folded over. Ugh!

    1. OUCH! I have done that too, though I didn't get through the whole of it before I realised. Did you unpick and start over or just give in? I might have just chucked and tantrum and thrown the thing away!

  10. Just recently I was sewing a pair of pants for my 3 year old. I turned them upside down and sewed the legs as the crotch seam. When I put them on him he looked like an old cowboy who hadn't gotten off his horse for a month.

    1. Nice mental image! Did you make him wear them out in public or unpick and redo them before leaving the house?

  11. Oh my...where to begin. There are so many! Something I tend to do every so often is to finish sewing something beautifully only to find that I've sewn up my turning hole! Ahhhh! Thank you for having such a great giveaway!

    1. Ahhh excellent work! I outlined my pattern plan to a friend the other day when she pointed out I had not included any way to turn it after sewing at all...oops! So I relate to that one :)

  12. Stupid craft related mistake...Umm, I make a fair few - sewing hems on school uniforms up, but accidentally sewing it at the same time to the bodice. I'm a much better knitter luckily!

    1. That's an especially irritating one, as it comes during sewing you have to do (mending) rather than sewing you want to do (new projects!). I admire your knitting prowess - I still make dumb mistakes in knitting, crochet, sewing and quilting...just different ones :)

  13. My world seems to revolve around craft mistakes. Most of the time I undo them and try to fix them, sometimes I can't work out how so they get put aside and occasionally I just let it slide. My most recent crafty mistake was in some cross stitching. I was doing a little squirrel sitting on some presents and I got to the point of taking a photo to show my progress when I realised (in the good light of the bathroom where I was taking the photo) that I had stitched the squirrel in two different shades of brown. One shade for the head and tail and another for the body! Argh!

    1. My friend did that with a tree she was cross stitching the other day - I hope that makes you feel better that it's a common issue when using brown floss!

What Kids Clothes Week does to the kids...

Two interesting moments today. Moment 1:  asking Marcus to model a lovely hot pink striped dress. Just the shot I wanted for my blog and to check the fit...complete with a nice flash of his monster alien underpants :) Seemingly wearing a dress is the funniest thing ever. Moment 2:  Issy drawing a picture of us today. There's the dog (looking like a cat...) on the sofa at the top, Mummy on the left, Issy and Marcus playing with toys at the bottom. Let's have a close up of Mummy in that picture: Yes, I am standing at the raised counter bench area, doing some pattern tracing and cutting.  Significant enough impact on her life that I made it into her pictures...Should I feel bad?  Nah...I am seriously considering making this my profile picture :) Here it is again once coloured in, as she did such a nice job. Woo Hoo for KCW!

What to wear to a winter wedding?

I recently attended the wedding of a close friend in New Zealand.  If you aren't aware, early August in New Zealand is COLD!  Cue a lot of googling on what to wear to an (outdoor) winter wedding :)  I even made a pinterest board of ideas I also took inspiration from my #SewStyleHero as part of the theme month that was running via The Sewcialists .  You can read about that here . Here is what I came up with: I used a heavy stretch navy sequin ( Pitt Trading ) for the skirt... ...and a soft silvery beige colour stretch velvet (from Tessuti ) for the top. The skirt was self-drafted and designed to be as full and sequiny glorious as the amount of fabric i had would allow.  I will probably cut off the skirt now to make it more wearable in everyday life, though I loved the effect for a fabulous winter wedding. The top is the  Seamwork Astoria  and was a bit of a revelation.  This was my second Seamwork pattern and I really liked it.  I know it's tren
